Laura Washington Hicks was born July 20, 1935, to the late Deacon Garnell Washington, Sr and Juanita Carroll Washington in Barnwell County, South Carolina. She was the third oldest of fourteen children from this union. On November 1, 2023 while in her residence, Laura received her wings and entered eternal rest.

Laura gave her heart to the Lord at an early age. Then she joined Brown Chapel Baptist Church, in Barnwell, South Carolina where she was a faithful active member. She was educated in the public schools of Barnwell and graduated from Butler High School in 1955.

After graduation she moved to Brooklyn, NY and joined Wayside Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She later united in holy matrimony to the late James E. Hicks in Barnwell, South Carolina and this union spanned over 60 years. She supported her husband throughout his military service until he was honorably discharged and retired in April 1974.  Laura traveled a lot as a military family member and worked several odd jobs.

After moving to Maryland in in December 1973, Laura became an active member of New Southern Rock Baptist Church (NSRBC), Washington, D.C, under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. M.G. Barr.  She loved the Lord and served faithfully. Shortly after joining NSRBC, she became the Secretary for the Sunday School Department, participated in Adult Sunday School, Bible Study, Vacation Bible School, Prayer Service, and was also a member of the Ever-Ready Club for many years. When her husband moved his membership to Gethsemane Baptist Church, Laura supported their Senior Missionary Ministry, Adult Bible Class #2, and various other programs.
