Obituary of Willie Askew

He leaves to mourn: One son, Gregory (Ginger) Askew, three grandsons, Anthony Askew, Christopher Askew, Alexander Askew all of St. Mary’s County, MD, one great granddaughter, Shayla Lewis of Montgomery, AL, two sisters, Elnora Hart and Mildred Thorne of Baltimore, MD, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. 

 

Preceding him in death are his devoted wife, Myrtle Askew, seven sisters, Mary McMillan, Frances Dukes, Cella Askew, Bessie Askew, Helen Smith, Doris Horton and Barbara Askew.

 

Grew up in Bertie County, NC. Joined the Air Force in1951. Served until 1955. Shortly after his discharge, he got married and moved to Washington, DC. He started his 30 year career working for the US Postal Service. He joined Bethesda Baptist Church in March 1967. At Bethesda, he was a Scout Master for Troop 517 for more than 10 years. In addition, during his many years of dedicated service at Bethesda , he was involved in the Baptist Training Union, Senior Usher Board, Director of Vacation Bible School, Deacon Board, Educational Outreach Unit and a active member of Sunday School.

 

A few years after his wife’s passing, he moved to St Mary’s County with his son and his family. He was an active member of the St. Mary’s Adult community. He passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family.

 

Visitation Friday, October 20, 2023, from 10 a.m. until hour of service 11 a.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church, 1808 Capitol Ave NE. Interment following service at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Services by BIANCHI.
