My deepest sympathies to Wendell's family!! I will always remember his kindness and helpfulness at Lake Anne Elementary School. I was a parent volunteer, who spent many, many hours at pancake breakfasts, hot dog/chili lunches, spaghetti dinners and did all sorts of fundraisers at the school.
I blew circuit breakers in the cafeteria all the time. Wendell patiently flipped them back on!! He decided that I needed my very own storage closet at the school. He cleared me a closet in the corner and let me keep all my fundraising supplies at school, instead of my living room.
Once, in Cheryll Chew's class, we made "bird balls" with suet for the holidays. Unfortunately, the first graders got lots of suet on the carpet. When the school reopened after the winter holidays, the suet had turned rancid. Poor Wendell. He had the carpet cleaned and never said a word.
He was a lovely human being. i will always remember his gentle nature.
I am so sorry for your loss.
May you find peace.
Sinncerely-
Suzi Evans

I sent out the sad news about Wendell. The following are comments to my email. I see some staff posted, but I thought the family should know these, too.
Thanks for sharing. Wendell was one of my favorite people.

Cathy, thank you so much for letting us know. We all adored Wendell.

Thanks for sharing this email of information, he was such a quiet loving hardworking helpful man. We thank God for blessing us with his presence over the years Thank you for sharing this . . . I am very sad to hear Wendall didn't enjoy more years in retirement. He was a diamond in the rough . . . at least from my perspective. So many evenings he kept tabs on me if I was working late, and regaled me with stories of his kids, his chickens, and former teachers. Never complained about any job I asked him to do.

Thank you so much for letting us know. I felt very sad and I hadn’t thought of him in years. I was with some LAES people last night and we were telling our favorite Wendell stories. He was such a kind man.

When my mother died, he made ribs and collard greens and dropped them off at the house. It was such an unexpected but thoughtful gesture.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Wallace. The beginning and end of the school year at Lake Anne were always chaotic, but Mr. Wallace never lost his cool. He would patiently move furniture for you, no matter how many times you asked, making sure you had what you needed to start the school year. When I was leaving after staying late in my classroom and couldn't find my car keys, he'd say, "Did you look through your purse?" After I said yes, he'd say, "Carefully go through your purse again, but do it slowly," and sure enough I'd find them. When it was getting dark outside, he'd always walk teachers to the door to make sure we got to our cars safely.
Hard-working, kind, and funny; he was the epitome of the gentle giant.
What a tragic loss. My condolences go out to all his family and friends.

To his core, Mr. Wallace was generous, kind-hearted and a person one could depend on. At work, his colleagues, students and their families recognized the significant contributions he made to Lake Anne Elementary’s day-to-day purpose. Quiet and calm, he would stop and come to someone’s rescue no matter what he was busy with. Their need would be his focus. “Take your time. Take your time.” I still hear his sage words recommending that I ease up. For years, his words always did and still do calm me. Listening to and telling stories about Mr. Wallace will be our link to his life. We wish those of you who love him an ease in your grief as the days unfold before you. My husband knew Mr. Wallace and joins me in this message. Cheryll Chew and John Frye

I was saddened to hear about Wendall's passing. He was a fixture at Lake Anne Elementary for many, many years. He did his best to accomodate all the teacher requests...and there were many. Larger than life but quiet, he was respected, appreciated, and cared for.
I hope he is enjoying his sweet potato pie in heaven.
