OBITUARY

Lois Yvonne Randolph was born on March 8, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, Danville, Virginia to the late Josephine Glass Redd and Henry Redd.  She departed this life on October 4, 2020, at George Washington University Hospital, surrounded by her ‘girls’ as she would so lovingly call them, Kimberly and Khandis.  She met and married the late Randolph Nathaniel (‘Doc’) King in Danville, VA, and from that union, her only daughter, Kimberly, was born.  She would later meet and marry the late Deacon Alexander Randolph.

Lois was educated in the Pittsylvania County Public School system and at an early age, she joined Mt. Freeman Missionary Baptist Church and accepted Jesus Christ into her heart as her Lord and Savior.  Years later, she made the difficult decision to leave Danville, VA, to join and support her husband, Doc King, in Washington, DC, as he pursued a better life for his young wife and daughter.  Lois worked as a cashier for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Washington, DC, until her retirement in the 80s.

When she came to Washington, DC, Lois found strength and healing at New Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church (formerly known as Randall Memorial Baptist Church).  There she sang alto in a number of choirs, served on the Deaconess Board, and taught Sunday School.  Lois was known as the ‘Candy Lady’ because everyone, whether adult or child, always knew she carried a suitcase full of treats.  This was ministry to her – she truly loved giving out treats.  Young and old would wait patiently on their turn for their treat and for a few minutes of her time and attention, which she joyfully and freely gave out.  When she was an active Sunday School teacher, she had such an impact on her students that many didn’t want to leave her class (whether because of the treats or the teachings), even though they had grown too old to be in her class.

Her quiet, caring, patient, and delicate demeanor drew so many to her…she was truly the Virtuous Woman as described in Proverbs 31, whose worth is far above rubies, whose children call her blessed, and who above all, feared the Lord.  Her smile, her touch, and her kind heart always saw the good in people.  She was not a part of idle conversation, gossip, or negativity…she was the ultimate example of a Godly woman.

Lois leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Kimberly Diane King; one granddaughter, Khandis Yvonne King; one great grandson, Keynen Lamar King-Kelly (or ‘Toonki’ as she lovingly called him); three sisters, Lovelean Fitz, Catherine Harden (John) of Danville, VA, and Alice Gaynell Price of Newport News, VA; one brother, Charlie Redd of Baltimore, MD, and a host of other relatives and friends.  In addition to her parents and husbands, she is predeceased by three siblings, Dalsie Redd Stamps, Dorothy Redd Ferguson, and General Arthur Redd.
