Obituary of Garland Powell
On Saturday April 25, 2020, Garland Delano Powell entered peacefully into eternal rest at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Garland Delano Powell was born on May 12, 1943 in McCellandtown, Pennsylvania to late Spious and Lillie Mae Powell. Garland attended grade school in Pennsylvania. Due to the family seeking advancement opportunities, they relocated to Brooklyn, New York where Garland attended middle school. Later the family returned to their birthplace, Emporia, Virginia where Garland graduated from Edward E. Wyatt High School. Garland enlisted in the United States Navy as a Personnel Specialist, stationed at Military District of Washington, Washington Navy Yard, District of Columbia.
Garland married Doris Colley and raised Johnetta, William and Sharon Colley. An addition to the family came later, two bundles of joy, twin girls Rowena and Rewa. After his military tour of duty ended, Garland became a Warehouse manager for Hechinger Lumber Company where he oversaw distribution operations, ensured the safety of all, motivated, and disciplined staff with his calm demeanor.
Continuing his religious upbringing, he joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. C. T. Yancey. Serving on the Trustee Board, member of the Second Choir and the Inspiration Male Chorus. In April 2017, he became a member of New Hope Church of God, Waldorf, Maryland, under the leadership of Dr. Aaron Jones, Senior Pastor.
Garland leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife, Doris of 51 years and his children: Dr. William Colley (Vernice Colley), (Chauntay Quinn), Sharon Cannon (Roderick) and Rewa C. Powell-Mack (Maurice), Tina Williams and Maureen Williams Brannum niece/daughters.
Grandchildren: Lavon Chisley, JaVon Chisley, Shavon Mullen (Darnell), Michael Johnson, Malik D. P. Mack, Marquis D. P. Mack, Macajah Colley, Dominik Colley, Imani Colley, Mekhi D. P. Mack, Skye P. Quinn-Colley and Pilahr N. Quinn-Colley.
Great grandchildren: Mykayla Chisley, Jordyn Bugam, Kamille Mullen, Kapree Mullen, Karymn Mullen and Karter Mullen.
Brother, Delbert B. Powell, (2) sister-n-laws Gloria Williams, Alberta Williams and (3) brother-in-laws James Williams, Curtis (Elana) Williams and Maurice (Harriette) Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, church family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughters, Johnetta and Rowena; parents, Spious and Lillie Mae Powell.
