Obituary of Sheryl Coon Sowell
On Saturday April 4, 2020, Sheryl C. Sowell entered into eternal rest. She was a wife, devoted mother, grandmother, doting aunt, sister and friend.
Born September 17, 1959, Sheryl Coon was the youngest daughter born to the late Ruby and Frank Coon. She was a graduate of Dunbar Senior High School in the District of Columbia. She attended the University of the District of Columbia majoring in accounting and Washington School for Secretaries from where she graduated with honors.
At a young age, Sheryl accepted Christ into her life and she was baptized at First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church. She later joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia where she worked on the Usher Board and with the Praise Dance which she enjoyed so much.
The joy of Sheryl‘s life were her three (3) sons: Shamont Coon, Larry Coon, and Lorenzo Herring. She loved her three (3) grand babies: Tamar and Tanaya Coon and Lorenzo Herring, Jr.
On April 26, 2002, Sheryl married the love of her life, John P. Sowell. They loved cruising and travelling together oftentimes in the blue van. He has provided her with much love and support before and during her illness. She was very family oriented and loved attending and hosting family gatherings.
Sheryl worked in the hotel field as a Supervisor in Housekeeping at The Marriott, The Madison Hotel, and at Duncan Transportation.
She is survived by her husband, her sons, three (3) stepdaughters: Shauntae Foggie (Lee) of Fredericksburg, VA, Jennifer Johnson (Dennis) of VA and Johnetta Sowell of Tucson, AZ and grandchildren: Jonathan Foggie, Amaya Johnson, Breille Goggie, Zachary Foggie and Alexandria-Grace Foggie.
Sheryl was always the doting Aunt over her niece Tanisha and her nephew Terrance who she affectionately called SamSam.
Sheryl has only one (1) sister, Theresa A. Hayes of Washington, DC; two (2) brothers-in-law: William (Brenda) of Fairfax, VA and Leonard (Paula) Sowell of Fredericksburg, VA; and Nancy Williams of Landover Hills, MD and a host of relatives and friends.
And we must not forget her four-legged daughter, Lindsay, who she absolutely adored.
