Losing my dad at a very young age, you were the only father figure I knew. We shared a special bond as birthday twins. As you so often reminded me, I was very much like my father. You always gave me insight into who my dad really was. You described his personality, his likes, & his idiosyncrasies to a tee. You may have never known how precious this was to me! I was honored that you were there to walk me down the aisle at my wedding. You were a very proud yet humble man. Always led by example. You always instilled in us great pride in being a member of the Gabriel clan. You were a treasure trove of facts and trivia regardless the subject matter. You were my most accurate resource for anything regarding our family genealogy, theology, politics, or Indian history. Your laughter and jovial spirit was infectious. I’ll always cherish our little visits with me bringing your special treats especially peanuts. Periyapa, you are deeply loved and painfully missed. I find solace in the fact that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience so I don’t say goodbye but say until we meet again. I know you will continue to watch over, guide and bless our family as always.
Love always (your favorite) Geetha.

Grandpa was a good man and lived a great life, accomplishing many things. Whenever I would ask Grandpa a question, he always had an answer. I asked him many questions. The last time I saw Grandpa, he called me a basketball player, because I was so tall. Also, when I was little, he would sit down in his chair and put his feet on a stool, and I would sit on his legs. I love my grandpa so much.

I first met Uncle back in the late 1980s. I remember being so incredibly nervous because I was meeting my girlfriend’s uncle, and telling him that I plan to marry her and wanted his blessing. What an incredible experience. I was welcomed into his home, and actually felt quite at ease, while I explained my love for his niece. As time went on, and other son-in-law‘s joined his family, he always treated me just like a son-in-law, even though I was married to his niece. I will always remember bringing him a special Blue Box whenever I returned from Asia and how he expressed his appreciation for me thinking of him. I will miss him deeply and the many conversations that we had on just about any topic. To my.” father-in-law.” Thank you for welcoming me into your family and let your brother know that I am taking good care of his daughter Valentine.
Miss you always

My grandpa was my biggest teacher. Just from the way he lived, he taught me so much. What it means to be generous, strong, and faithful. Why the beauty and joy in life comes from living for others. How to pick a good mango in the grocery store. He has always been my guiding light.
He was incredibly humble, but there was no doubt that he was brilliant. I remember experiencing this firsthand at my Confirmation. The bishop had asked a tough history question during his homily. It was a question that no one in the congregation knew the answer to. Well, almost no one. From one of the front pews, my grandpa raised his hand and confidently gave the correct answer. I remember being in awe and feeling so proud to be his grandson.
More recently, his lessons became a little more formal. In my second year of college, I began taking Tamil classes, and learning our language. He became my professor. Almost every day, from Cambridge to Hyattsville, I’d FaceTime him. I would check my work with him, and ask him questions when I was stuck. He would always encourage me, and tell me I was doing “wonderful”, that my work was “absolutely correct” and would rave about my “beautiful” handwriting.
One of my most special memories is when my Tamil teacher invited him to give a guest lecture. It also happened that the day of his guest lecture was also my 21st birthday. What an amazing birthday gift. We talked about his life and read and translated some of his poetry. It’s a day I will never forget. I know that whenever I read, write, or speak Tamil, his spirit will be close to mine. To me, Tamil will always be a gift from my grandpa.
My grandpa wasn’t able to make it to Boston to see my graduation from Harvard last year. The flight would have been too hard. But, I know for a fact, with his new angel wings, he will be there when I graduate law school.
ரொம்ப நன்றி என் பேராசிரியர். Thank you my Professor. Thank you Grandpa. I love you forever.

At just 5 years old I left a voicemail for my grandparents emphasizing that I was beyond lucky to have them in my life. I told them I would always take care of them even when they were sick and old. the final words in my voicemail that I sent to my ammmama and grandpa was I know all the time that I am the one who is very blessed.
To this day, the words that I spoke at 5 years old continue to remain true. God blessed me with the most perfect grandfather a little girl could ever ask for. A grandfather who would move mountains for his family. A grandfather who would sing me beautiful songs. A grandfather who could answer any history question I could ever come up with. I thank God every single day for allowing me to have 16 wonderful years with my grandfather. Though my heart breaks to know that I can’t hear him sing me one more song, tell me one more interesting fact, show him one more report card, give him one last hug, I will forever hold his presence in my heart. I will always live my life the way he taught me to, and that is to be of service to others and do well in my studies because that is what was most important to him. He walked through life humbly and graciously, everyday I strive to do the same. I promise to make u proud grandpa. I love and miss you so much grandpa and I will never forget that I am the one who is very blessed.

I’m Lucas Peters, Mariaswamy Gabriel was my grandfather by my Mom, Caroline. For much of my life, people have told me how similar I am to my grandfather. We both share a love of books, history, and politics. People have even remarked that we look very similar. However, I maintain that I am much better looking, and I’m sure even Grandpa would agree that I am a much better cook.
However. the differences don’t end there. Grandpa was a man dedicated to doing the right thing, even when it wasn’t convenient for him. I have been fortunate to travel to India and bear witness to the church that he built atop a mountain, and the university he helped build to uplift the marginalized and poor in his home community. These projects he built serve to have a transformative impact on people’s lives, but they also enshrine Grandpa’s indomitable spirit forever. As I continue to live my life, I hope to transform people’s lives the same way Grandpa did. The same way he did for me. I love you Grandpa, and we will miss you very much.

Dear uncle, I was so blessed to have had your love and friendship for the last 30+ years. You are an inspiration to me. Your generosity was limitless, asking for nothing in return and always extending your support whenever it was needed. Whenever I needed guidance, or someone to talk to, you were there. Our conversations, both in person and over the phone, were filled with shared joys and invaluable advice.
From a community perspective, you stood as a pillar of the Indian American Catholic Association (IACA) and strongly supported the “Our Lady of Good Health Vailankanni” project at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, USA. Over three decades ago, you played a key role in establishing the Tamil Catholic Sangam in the Washington, DC, region. We salute your unwavering commitment and dedication to both the IACA and Tamil Catholic communities.
Your absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. You will be greatly missed. May your soul find eternal peace.
With respect and love,

Though our great uncle Mariaswamy Gabriel, lived a long and fulfilling life, it is still painful to accept his passing. This is a big and irreplaceable loss, and no one can fill the emptiness left behind. We will miss his presence and wise guidance greatly.
As we reflect on his life and his accomplishments, we clearly understand that his love and fear of God enabled him to run a good race in this world. With his faith, he competed well and finished the race, and now his Lord and our God will award him with everlasting life. His life was truly an example of Psalm 128:
“Blessed are all who fear the LORD, and who walk in his ways. What your hands provide you will enjoy; you will be blessed and prosper. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your home, Your children like young olive plants around your table. Just so will the man be blessed who fears the LORD. May the LORD bless you from Zion; may you see Jerusalem’s prosperity all the days of your life, and live to see your children’s children. Peace upon Israel!”
We grieve, but feel proud and happy for God's blessing of having known him. He had such an admirable spirit and was an inspiration to all. We keep him in our thoughts and prayers as we move forward.

Dear Chithappa,
You are truly the greatest of all Gabriels. You are truly the greatest of all Gabriels. Your love and care for your brothers' children knew no bounds. Me and my sister Ezhil are eternally grateful for the support you provided, especially in ensuring our full education.
. The life we lead today is a testament to your immense generosity and unwavering support.
Your selflessness was unmatched. You never hesitated to help anyone who approached you, and you never expected anything in return. This quality set you apart as an extraordinary human being, one whose kindness and compassion touched the lives of all who knew you.
To me, you were more than just a chithappa; you were my friend, philosopher, guide, and consoler. Your presence brought comfort and wisdom into my life, and your absence has left a profound emptiness that I struggle to fill. I miss our phone calls, our chit chats, and our video calls dearly.
As I navigate through life without you by my side, I find myself at a loss for someone to share my feelings with. But I take solace in the belief that you are watching over us from heaven, guiding us as you did when you were alive. Your memory will continue to inspire and guide me, and I will strive to honor your legacy in all that I do.

To me, you're not just my mama; you're more than my father. I've confided all my sorrows in you more than anyone else. You've always been there to listen, offering your support and understanding without hesitation.
One of the happiest moments of my life was when you visited our home in Tindivanam for three unforgettable days. Your warmth and love filled our house, bringing joy to every corner. Those precious moments together will always hold a special place in my heart.
From the depths of my soul, I want to thank you for everything you've done for us. You've tackled every problem with genuine care and wisdom, never faltering in your support. Your love extends not only to my husband (Inbaraj) but also to me, treating us both with equal affection and kindness.
The memory of your last video call from the hospital is imprinted in my mind. Despite your illness, your love and care for each and every member of our family shone brightly through the screen. Your blessings filled us with strength and reassurance, reminding us of the extraordinary person you are.
Mama, you are truly one of a kind. Your selflessness, love, and unwavering presence in our lives make you irreplaceable. I am forever grateful for the love and guidance you've given me, and I promise to cherish your memory for as long as I live.

I must have had 100s of pictures with Sam's family from 1998 until 2019! I am Fr Vincent Sekhar SJ, working in the Dept of Philosophy at Arul Anandar College, close to Madurai City, Tamilnadu. Needless to say, I was very fond of Sam, Amma Regina, their daughters and sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Some of Sam's grandchildren were so small when I saw them in 1998 but much grown up as I saw them in the LIVE telecast of the Service. I was happy at the thought that I would see you, Amma, and others in September 2024 on my way to Berkeley, California, for my research. Mmmm...God has his plans. I will miss you forever, Sam.
To me, you are a gem of a person, a gentleman, a great conversationalist, respectful of people, whoever they are, and well-informed of many things both in the USA and on Indian soil. You used to tell me that I was a good feeder of information about the Jesuits in Madurai Province particularly those whom you knew, Fr Michael Amaladoss, Fr Alosanaya.... We all will miss you. Rest in Peace and God's protective hands.
Fr Vincent Sekhar SJ from Jesuit Madurai Province

Thata, You were truly a wonderful person, whose care extended not only to your own children but also to your brothers' kids and their own grandkids. Your love knew no bounds, transcending distances and borders, reaching us in India even while you were abroad. Your presence in our lives was a blessing, and your love continues to resonate within our hearts.
Your poems were a testament to your creativity and depth of thought, and they added a special touch to our lives. Your mastery of the Tamil language made your words even more beautiful, weaving intricate meanings that touched our souls.
Among the many treasures you shared with us, "Kane Yen Maniye Thongu" holds a special place in our hearts. This lovely lullaby, narrating the story of Jesus with simplicity and depth, captivated us all. Even now, my mom (Anthony Mary), dad (Inbaraj), and I (Jasmine Gabriel) find solace in singing it to our children, who have grown to adore it just as we did. It's become a favorite in our household, a cherished tradition that we will pass on to the next generation as a tribute to you, dear Thatha.
Your absence is deeply felt, and it's hard to believe that you're no longer with us. We miss you dearly, and we take comfort in the belief that you are watching over us from heaven. May your soul rest in peace, and may your blessings continue to guide and protect us in our journey through life.

Captain Dr. Mariasamy Gabriel, known as Uncle Sam in American circle, was fondly called Captain Swamy in his native village, Vetavalam, India. First time, I came to know Sam was in 1987 in Hyattsville, Maryland, when I started my PhD work at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Since then till today he has been my friend, philosopher and admirer. I was loved and treated like one of his family. He was basically a fantastic human being. He always enjoyed a good company, small or big. He was a religious in spirit because he loved priests, religious and particularly Jesuits. Apart from his contrbutions to the development of his village, his initial donation of about 7 acres land near Vetavalam became the seed and foundation for starting a college there by the Jesuits. He will live in their consciousness as long as Loyola College, Vetavalam, exists. Though he adopted America as his own country, he remained truly a Tamilian to the core. His thirst for Tamil culture and traditions was unquenchable till the end. He was intelligent and hardworking and never really rested at any point of time. He was truly rewarded with a long life, perhaps, for two reasons: 1. He had a wonderful wife, Regina and five daughters who made him never feel the lack of a son. 2. He was optimistic and enjoyed life to the full. He always told me that he cannot ask God for more. Now, he may be saying the same words in heaven because he is with his Maker.
My friend Sam, enjoy the eternal party with the Lord in your company!.

I met my father in law for the first time in 1996. I was marrying his daughter Kala and moving to the USA. Clearly we were at the opposite ends of the corporate race as he had just retired and i was looking for a job here. His advice on everything was spot on.
We quickly became Saturday happy hour mates, enjoying a scotch and shooting the breeze.
He regaled me with his stories from the army and me about my stressful job. The scotch and his even keel manner always tamped my stress and got us in a good mood to discuss politics. He was a hardcore democrat and cared about policies that benefited the common man, even if, at his expense.
He was a great grandfather, taking time to take our kids to school and attending their presentations with regularity, even when we could not make it. He was also a great influence on our kids, teaching them politics and the ways of the world.
He had a positive outlook on life and always saw the good in people and in the current moments of life. He was fascinated by the differing ideologies of the current pope versus the German bishops. Essentially he had an open enough perspective and view to debate without convention and emotion to interfere with logic.
He was a deeply religious and spiritual man, who tried to understand the why behind the rituals.
We all knew his generosity and I was often asked to pick up and bring home his frequent visitors from family and his favorite Jesuit and priest community. A friend of a friend of a friend was enough to get his full attention and hospitality.
It’s a full circle moment for me as he got to see me retire before saying farewell. It was a bonus to spend additional time with him in the last several months driving him to doctors appointments and physical therapy sessions.
Fare thee well father in law, father, friend, philosopher, religious guide and happy hour drinking buddy! I will surely miss you and our times together.

Mr Sam has lived his life fully and meaningfully. He was a man of God and a man for others. Personally he has been an unfailing friend, invaluable mentor, and a beacon of values to me. He has been flowing like a river nurturing and nourishing the lives of so many people who came in touch with him. On behalf of the Jesuits in Tamilnadu (India) I thank Mr Sam for all his initiatives and helps in educating the socially marginalized in order to form them as leaders with responsibility in transforming the society. He been a source of inspiration and instrumental in our founding Loyola College in his native Vettavalam. May his dear soul rest in peace.

A self-made pioneer from an obscure village, Periappa transformed so many lives with his benevolence. A family man at heart, he has shown by example that, living an ordinary, no-frills life actually has a lasting impact on family and everyone around. As we reminisce his life and celebrate his passing, he wants us to realise that it's family first and rest will follow.

In heavenly peace, our dear Mariaswamy now resides. Blessed with a heart full of laughter and wisdom, his generosity knew no bounds. He taught us through radiant love, gentle kindness, and unwavering faith - emanating passion that revealed the depth of God’s love. As we mourn this profound loss, let us find solace in knowing he is now our guardian angel. May he guide Gabriel's gang from above as they continue their journey on earth. Pray for us always Mariaswamy!

I have the fondest memories of Sam when we worked together for Monsignor Ralph Kuehner at the Office of Social Development for the Archdiocese of Washington in the 1970s’. I met Sam and his wife, Regina, and their beautiful family. Sam was a delight to work alongside of. He was a man of great intelligence and deep faith. He modeled for all his colleagues a love of God and neighbor. Please be assured of my prayers for the Repose of Sam’s soul, and that God will console his family and friends who mourn his passing.
