Enid Rose Maitland Obituary

March 23, 1938- February 3, 2025

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the homegoing of Enid Rose Maitland, who peacefully transitioned into theloving arms of the Lord’s loving arms on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 12:27 AM at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She was 86 years old.

Enid was born on March 23, 1938, to Constantine and Francella Maitland in the quiet township of Pigeon Valley, Unity, Saint Andrews, Jamaica, W.I. She was the second youngest of five brothers and two sisters. From the start, Enid defied the odds —having been born with an abnormal heart, doctors did not expect her to live past the age of two. But God had other plans.

Raised in a household filled with faith and love, the Maitland family were active members of Mt. Charles Baptist Church, where Enid’s deep and abiding faith took root. She attended and graduated from Unity Primary School, later moving to Kingston to work at the National Baking Company. A woman of strong conviction, she became a devoted member of Torrington United Church where she was baptized.

Enid’s nurturing spirit led her to a career in childcare, where her love for children shone.  As a mother of four, she extended that care and love beyond her own family.  When her mother became bedridden, Enid selflessly returned to Saint Andrew’s with her children to provide full-time care to her mother. Her devotion to family and faith was clear in every sacrifice she made.

At the age of 35, and despite her heart condition, Enid courageously traveled alone to the United States, becoming the first in her family to do so. However, upon arriving in Baltimore, MD —her sponsor never showed up. Stranded at the airport, two God-sent Samaritans stepped in, helping her find housing and employment.

This began Enid’s 30-year career as a beloved nanny, where she nurtured and cared for generations of children with the same love she gave her own family. Her dedication was unmatched—despite not having a driver’s license, she took up to four buses daily, braving all weather to fulfill her duties

After ten years of perseverance and legal battles, Enid reunited with her children and brought them to America. She later had her youngest daughter, raising six girls in a home filled with love, faith, and resilience.

As her family grew, so did her joy. She cherished her grandchildren, finding fulfillment in spending time with them, cheering them on at their activities, and celebrating their milestones.

In 1973, Enid found her spiritual home at National City Christian Church in Washington, DC. She was a faithful member, attending Sunday school, serving as a greeter in the hospitality ministry, and dedicating herself to feeding the unhoused at soup kitchens. Whether helping those in need or feeding the birds outside her home, she seized every opportunity to serve.  Even when her health made it hard to attend church alone, she found comfort in worshiping with her daughters at their respective churches. Her faith was her anchor through every season of life.

Enid’s joy for life was infectious. She loved traveling, dining out, reading the Bible, and doing word search puzzles. An avid gardener, she found peace tending to her plants and nurturing new life. She also had a deep love for gospel and country music, often humming her favorite tunes while gardening.

Above all, Enid Rose Maitland was a woman of exceptional faith, boundless love, and selfless service. She gave freely, loved unconditionally, and lived with an unshakable trust in God’s plan for her life. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and steadfast faith will endure in the hearts of all who knew her. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Enid is survived by her brother, Joslyn Maitland; her daughters, Marcia Milton (Winston Rochester), Sandra Adkins, Maria Creighton (Marco Cabezas), and Debralee Woodbury (Robert Woodbury); her grandchildren, Hirfa Denise Richards Hussey (Germain Richards), Tannisha Hutchinson, Miles Cabezas, Merrick Cabezas, Robert Woodbury, Ethan Woodbury, Jaison Woodbury, Christina Rochester, and Mia Cabezas; and her great-grandchildren, Deanna Richards and Josiah Richards. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
