Howard Tyre Obituary

Howard Augustus Tyre, affectionately known as "Gus," was born on October 30, 1946, in Washington, D.C., to Thomas George and Matilda Vandoria Tyre. He was the second of two children, following his late sister, Joyce Elaine Dawkins. Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Austin Tyre.

Gus's educational journey took him through the Arlington County school system, culminating in his graduation from Washington-Lee High School after attending Hoffman Boston High School. He had a passion for basketball, eagerly participating in both the varsity and junior varsity teams, where he earned a reputation as a skilled player and a supportive teammate. Basketball was a significant part of his life, and he could often be found shooting hoops on the court.

After graduating from high school, Gus dedicated 42 years to a fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service. He was a proud father to two sons: Rodney Barrett Tyre, who preceded him in death, and Christopher Barrett Tyre. A true lover of the arts, Gus enjoyed good music, every Sunday morning, one could hear his rich tenor voice resonating with the hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," as he stood confidently in the choir loft He was particularly fond of hand dancing. He eagerly anticipated cabaret events, where he would light up the dance floor, showcasing his surprising agility despite his larger frame. He also relished playing bid whist; when he stood up and began tossing his cards on the table, it was clear that the game was coming to an end. Gus and his wife, Jackie were frequent travelers that loved going on cruises and playing casino games.

Gus was a man of intellect, often seen engrossed in a book or perusing the newspaper, occasionally checking the obituary section, often stating, “well, I don’t see my name in here, so I guess I’m doing ok.” —something that was sometimes the highlight of his day.

Gus leaves behind cherished memories for his loving son, Christopher B. Tyre (Wife Delaney), and three grandchildren: Angelina Tyre, Logan Kennedy Tyre, and Caiden Maxwell Tyre. Gus is also survived by his Step-Daughter, Veronica Austin, Dory Dawkins(niece),Dewitt Dawkins (nephew), special friends Raymond Howard, Rosa O’Neal, and Yvonne Staton, along with a multitude of other friends.
